The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is starting its spring trout stocking program on March 16th. This means more opportunities for anglers to catch rainbow trout in select Iowa lakes.
Trout stocking is when the DNR adds fish to lakes and streams to improve fishing. This helps create recreational opportunities for people who enjoy fishing. Rainbow trout are a popular species for stocking because they are relatively easy to raise and are fun to catch.
During March and April, DNR fisheries staff will be releasing rainbow trout into 12 lakes across Iowa. The cool weather trout program is designed to provide fishing opportunities when water temperatures are suitable for trout.
Each of the 12 lakes will receive between 1,000 and 2,000 rainbow trout. This amount will give anglers a good chance to catch fish. Stocking helps to create a "put-and-take" fishery, meaning anglers can harvest (keep) the trout they catch.
Iowa is not typically known for trout fishing in its lakes, as many Iowa lakes become too warm in the summer for trout to survive. The DNR's cool weather trout program works around this limitation by stocking trout in the spring and fall. This allows anglers to enjoy trout fishing during the cooler months when the water temperatures are more favorable.
There are several benefits to the DNR's trout stocking program:
