Pretoria - North West businessman Suleiman Carrim has submitted a formal application for a postponement of his testimony before the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday. This development comes as the commission continues its investigation into a network of transactions potentially linked to corruption.
The Madlanga Commission is currently examining a series of transactions involving millions of rands. These transactions allegedly connect Carrim to Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, who is described as an alleged criminal kingpin, and Hangwani Maumela, who is alleged to have benefited from tenders related to Tembisa Hospital. The commission's chief evidence leader, Mathew Chaskalson, has indicated that the evidence presented could potentially lead to money laundering charges.
Carrim has been giving testimony before the commission, addressing these allegations and providing his account of the events.
Carrim has denied allegations that he received kickbacks from an irregular South African Police Service (SAPS) tender that was purportedly secured by Matlala. Instead, Carrim claims that he invested R10 million into Matlala's company, Medicare24. He stated that Matlala was slow to repay the investment and ultimately only returned R1.75 million to Carrim's company, Tameez.
Furthermore, Carrim alleges that Matlala used him, requesting that Carrim advance R750,000 to Maumela. Carrim says he paid R500,000 to Maumela, who then directed him to make the payment to Luthaga Trading Enterprise.
Carrim maintains his innocence and claims that he was manipulated by his associates, including Brown Mogotsi, whom he believed to be a close friend. He asserts that Matlala instructed him to make payments to individuals such as Maumela. Carrim denies any involvement in wrongdoing.
The postponement request adds another layer to the ongoing investigation. The commission will need to consider the reasons behind Carrim's request and decide whether to grant it, potentially impacting the timeline and progression of the inquiry.
The implications of the Madlanga Commission's findings are substantial, potentially leading to criminal charges and impacting public trust in government institutions. The investigation highlights concerns regarding procurement processes and the potential for corruption within the public sector.
