The Cebu Capitol has implemented a four-day compressed workweek schedule. This decision aims to lower energy and operational costs, especially as global issues, like the conflict in the Middle East, continue.
On Monday, March 9th, Governor Pamela Baricuatro signed Executive Order (EO) number 16. This EO mandates all Capitol offices to shift to a new work schedule. Employees will now work from Monday to Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Executive Order took effect immediately upon signing. It emphasizes that government employees must still complete the required 40-hour workweek, as stipulated by the Civil Service Commission rules. This means employees will work longer hours each day to fulfill their weekly obligations.
Beyond the compressed workweek, the Governor also introduced stricter guidelines for saving energy within government offices. This move underlines the Capitol's commitment to reducing its environmental impact and managing resources responsibly.
The implementation of a 4-day workweek is a significant shift in operational strategy. The goal is to achieve cost savings in areas like electricity and building maintenance. This can be especially important during times of economic uncertainty or rising energy prices.
The Governor's call for other Local Government Units (LGUs) to consider similar measures highlights the potential for wider adoption of this strategy. If other LGUs follow suit, it could lead to substantial energy savings across the region.
By implementing this new schedule, the Cebu Capitol aims to lead by example. The hope is that this initiative will encourage other government agencies and businesses to explore innovative ways to reduce costs and promote sustainable practices.
